The past never feels so distant when compared with the similarities of today. Though the start of the Roarin’ Twenties seems a far-away concept, in terms of modern history, the decade is relatively close contrasting something like the period of Machiavelli’s The Prince. In a time when learning is more vital than ever, knowing our communities’ and countries’ histories helps us understand how we are ever shaped by our society. 

Our first issue’s theme of The Twenties can be widely interpreted by all who hear it. Our teams mainly focus on the Roarin’ Twenties- think The Great Gatsby and all the negative -isms and -phobias ever thought up. It is crucial to note that with such a wide theme, not all events and ideas emerging from the time could be discussed in one issue. We are young adults being raised in a Western country. Our views and passions are bound to be formed by such an atmosphere; our voices will carry this bias and must be noted when reading or viewing.  

This being said, we are The Violet Magazine; a mix-and-mash queer and BIPOC high school students. Our board, writing, fashion and art, design, and finance departments have worked tirelessly to bring this collection to you, and we hope it’s everything you want it to be.
